rough cut feedback

Image
The feedback given about my front page has indicated that the image is good as it relates the the mise en scene of the genre however it would be good if the whole guitar fitted into the shot so that the genre is even more identifiable. The font styles were also picked upon for being liked as they were also representative of the genre such as the 'Annabel rose' font style and the title, as they give the page a unique style. To improve y front cover I need to follow the typical code and conventions of magazines, such as decapitalising the web address and the layout needs to be adapted. The text about the artist is too straight forward and doesn't particularly engage the reader. Also to follow the conventions, the artists names tend to be found at the bottom of the page rather then at the side. This will allow me to place more text on the right hand side of the page which will engage the reader as there will be more features to read. One key element throu...

contents page 05

Image
To continue in the development of my contents page I have made further alterations to it in order to make it more conventional and engaging for the reader. I have adapted it by adding a background colour to the page in which I chose to place a grey colour behind all the other features. This makes the text stand out amongst the other aspects of the page. But in order to further empathise the text I have placed the text into boxes to clearly define the different sectors of text. To make these boxes behind the text more interesting to the reader I have made them different colours to the page number, this again separates the two features. To reiterate this factor I have alternated the colours of the page number and text for the stories of black and white. I chose these two colours as they don't take any emphasis away from the main house style colours but still engages the reader enough to make them want to read more.

I have changed the majority of my text, I have changed the text under the main article as it didn't particularly engage the audience. In order to create a sense of excitement on the front page I have done this by giving the reader information on the artists new album rather than their life as the magazine should predominantly priorities music. I have also moved the list of artists from the right hand side of the page to the bottom of the page, this has allowed me to place more engaging stories on the right and gives the reader more information on what the magazine will contain. As shown through my research, magazines that have included a list of artists names they all have some kind of divider between the different artists/bands. I have chosen to use a divider of a star in a blue colour as it doesn't take too much attention away from the artists names but clearly sets them apart from one another. Another alteration I have made is add more text on the right hand side which i...

double page spread 04

Image
I have added the main image of the artist onto this addition of my double page spread. I have chosen an environment in which I believe will engage the reader and represent the genre of indie/acoustic.  I have placed the image in a certain position so that the artists name is still a main objective of the image as well as the image being a large focus. I have also included the magazines name in the top right hand corner as this is a code and convention of a music magazine in order to further reiterate that the article is from the magazine. I would like to re-take the main photo main as I believe that the artist isn't fully the focus of the image as she is looking away from the camera, I may also change the location in order to fully fit with the genre and engagement of the readers eye. If |I chose to keep the same location I will move the quote over onto the same image page, and will place the quote on the wall as though it is graffiti. This will represent the genre as it is more ...

double page spread 03

Image
From my last double page spread I have altered a couple of the arrangements, I have chosen to place the artists name at the top of the second page rather then at the bottom as makes the artist more dominant and clearly signifies the artists name and that it will be the main focus of the article. I have continued with the pink colour as it represents the artist and again puts further emphasis on the fact that the article is solely on the artist alone. I have highlighted certain words in the quote by emphasising the words in a pink font which again represents the individual and creates synergy between the double page spread and whole magazine. In order to make the questions being asked to the artist stand out more among the other text I also highlighted them in a pink font, this has made them more prominent on the page and engages the reader as it adds an element of colour to the article.

I wrote my article on the basis of the artists life and experiences in the music industry. I decided to write my article as though it was an interview, I firstly wrote an introduction which included introducing the artist to the reader so I just gave the basis of their music career so far. I then included the questions that the interviewer would be asking in the lighter font and capitals to make it clear. The artists response is written under the question, I aimed to keep the questions focused on music as it is a music magazine and will be expected by the reader. The responses also include the artists own pinion which is really what the reader wants as they are reading the article based upon wanting to learn more about the artist therefore their opinion is critical for the engagement of the reader. I placed the text into three columns as this is a standard code and convention of every music magazine and was shown through my research. The text flows nicely through the columns...

front page font styles

Image
I have used these three font styles throughout all three pages of my magazine as the represent the genre of indie and acoustic music. I chose to use the first font as it is quite retro as it uses a type writing style of font, this retro style relates to the genre of indie as it is part of the connotations of indie. I chose the second font 'vinyl stickons' as some of the letters are slanted and it is all in block capitals, I chose to use this as through my research it was similar to other fonts that were used. The research indicated that on the front cover some text was always in lock capitals as it immediately engages the audiences attention. Finally, I decided to use the last font 'moon flower bold' as it represents the genre of indie and acoustic music as it again is in block capitals which was a popular choice shown through m research. I also chose this font as it I simple but draws attention to the text as it is unique and has a general style that looks nice amo...

double page spread 01

Image
From my research I have been able to identify that the typical layout of a double page spread tends to either have a divide between the two pages as one contains text only and the other an image. The other layout tends to be where the main image falls over both pages and text does the same. I chose to go with the layout of having the two things divided as it looks more organised and makes the text more dominant on the page. I have included the artists name at the bottom of the right hand side page, this will cover some of the image and makes it clear that the article focuses on her, so that when the reader is flicking through the magazine it would be eye catching and will indicate that this page is the main article. I have placed a quote from the artist on the top left hand corner as I saw this on a couple of the magazines that I researched and it appealed to me. I related the quote to music as this is the main focus of the article and indicates this to the reader. I have also pl...

contents page 04

Image
I decided to change the font style of some of the text as it looked more engaging having less font styles as it looked over crammed of different font styles. I have now only got three different font styles, one used on the titles of the columns, another on the title of the page and magazine and the last used on the main text. I will continue to use these font styles throughout my magazine to represent the magazine and be identified with the magazines name. I also changed the font style of the page numbers as these were in a different font, I have used the same font for the numbers as the text, the type writing font as it represents the genre well as it gives a retro look to the page.

contents page 03

Image
Firstly I placed the title at the top of the page in the same font as the title on the front page as this creates synergy between the two pages and indicates to the audience that it is from the same magazine. I also included the magazine's name in the top right hand corner as it clearly justifies the page as being from a certain magazine. I have included titles for each of the columns as it divides the page up neatly and creates a sense of organisation on the page as the reader can navigate themselves between the pages and see what they find interesting. Under the feature story column title I have included the artists name as it again indicates to the audience that the main article will focus on her, alongside this I have included an image of the artist. I have continued to use the same font for the artists name as it gives them a sense of personality and is easily noticed and stands out from the other fonts. I included the typical code and convention of the page numbers along th...

contents page 01

Image
I originally chose to stick with the exact same design for my contents page as I did on my preliminary task, as seen above. I would place the title of the page on the left hand side and use the rest of the page for the information about articles. However, through my research it is indicated that this is not a typical contents page layout as it isn't a suitable set up for the text as most of the magazines from my research had lots more text on in order to engage the reader. To keep with the code and conventions of a music magazine I chose to re-do the layout of the page, as seen below. I placed the title at the top of the page and placed images on the right hand side with the text on the left. I will include three images, one being of the artist that was on the front cover as it creates synergy and indicates to the audience that they are the main focus of the main article. The text will have titles for different columns as this again has been shown to...

front page 03

Image
After placing my main image onto the magazines front page I changed the colour of the title as it was clearer in a white font and fitted in with the house style colours more than the black did. The white title also represents the genre in a better way as it is more calming and engaging to the audience as it is more dominant over the background colour. I chose to take the photo of the artist like this as it clearly represents the genre of indie/acoustic music as she is holding a guitar which is seen as a code and convention of particularly acoustic magazines. Her style again represents the genre as she her style is hipster and current with the trends just like her wearing a denim jacket. I may reconsider taking my main image again as the whole guitar isn't in the image and it is a key prop as it represents the genre. I have included a key convention of that the artist is looking directly at the camera, this is important as it gives the artist a sense of personality and engages he r...

front page 04

Image
After looking over my research of front covers of music magazines I decided to change the main image on my front page. The other image that I had originally used consisted of the artist holding a guitar, this helped represent the genre of the magazine but wasn't a typical code and convention. The most important aspect of the main image on a front page is that it focuses on the artist and I think that the guitar took attention away from the artist. From the research that I have conducted most of the images are close ups of the artists face, wherethe artist is looking directly at the camera. I have changed my image to suit the code and conventions of a front page main image. I used as close up camera shot of the artist in order to engge the reader and make it clear that the main article in the magazine is of this artist. The clothing that the artist is wearing clearly represents the genre of inide as her style is highly seen in the indie industry as she is wearing a long sleeved bl...

front page 02

Image
I have changed the font style to suit the genre, I believe that it represents the genre in a better manner than the other font style that I used as it doesn't take too much attention away from the main image and it can also been seen as retro as it connotes type writing which relates to genre as it is part of the genre to be retro. I have also changed the text as the other one that I had was quite over powering of the image as there was a lot of text which isn't a typical code and convention as shown through my research. I have chosen to include text on who will feature in my magazine, in order to engage a large audience I have included well known artists and bands. These artists and bands can also be easily identified with the genre as thy are all easily representatives of the indie and acoustic genre. I have added an 'extras' place at the bottom of the page to engage readers with more articles that they could be interested in, including weekly features of the magaz...

front page 01

Image
I firstly began by placing the title of my magazine in the centre, at the top of the page as this is a typical convention for all magazines to have as it clearly draws the readers eye to the name and can identify the articles with this particular magazine. Then I chose to put the artist's name towards the left hand side of the page as it engages the reader but doesn't take a lot of attention away from the main image (when I place it in). Through my research I found that magazines such as NME used little blocks of colour to emphasise certain aspects of the magazine and text. I have used these block to emphasise the text about Annabel which will be underneath her name and the text on the other side of the page which will be another key article in the magazine. I chose to use a pink font for Annabel's name as it connotes her gender and can also be seen to represent her genre of music as it is calming like acoustic/indie music. The synergy between the pink text and blocks of...

Questionnaire

Image
In order to engage the correct target audience for my magazine I needed to indicate he specific age range that most of my readers would be. So that I can adjust specific principles such as content around their age range. From my questionnaire my target audience has an age range of 13 to 17 which implies that the majority of my readers will also fall into this age bracket. For my magazine to engage this audience I need to make the magazine most appealing to this specific age range. I can do this by applying a colour scheme that appeals to them and having articles that they can relate to. In my questionnaire I asked what colours alongside black and white the respondent would like to see, I gave them a variety of answers in order for them to chose what they thought best for my magazine. The options were: blue, green, red, pink, orange and gold. I asked the respondent to pick two of the colours, as my researched indicated that the majority of magazines have two other colours...

NME double page spread

Image
This magazines layout is different to others that I have researched but it is highly effective as it engages the reader in different ways. One way it does this is that it has used two main features, one being the image and the other the quote. The image is a major feature as it takes up the majority of the right hand side page, the artist is looking directly at the reader therefore engages them into reading the article. The artists style definitely represents the genre of rock/punk which is clear to the reader at first glance. Her style is rock/punk as she is wearing an oversized checked shirt with the sleeves rolled up to show her tattoos on her fore arm. She is wearing chains around her neck and as heavy eyeliner, these are all connotations of the genre and she could be identified with being a goth. The other main feature of this issue of the NME magazine is the quote, it takes up the majority of the left hand side page but also overlaps onto the next page. Just like the quote the ...

Q double page spread

Image
This double page spread has used the layout of taking up one of the pages for an image and using the other page for the content of the article. The image is of very high quality which makes the magazine easy to be identified as a high end magazine, especially due to the artist that feature in the magazine as they are highly well known for example this double page spread focuses on Lana Del Rey. The main image is a close up of Lana Del Rey which infers that she is the focus of the article, the image shows Lana closing her eyes and touching her neck which could connote her being a promiscuous woman which is further shown by her lips being parted which is a typical convention of a woman doing in a music magazine. I have learnt this through my magazine research. The image is also quite dull, her lips and neck are the most eye catching as they are in the light whereas the majority of her face is covered by a shadow. The other parts of the image that stand out are ...

Q front page

Image
On this issue of the Q magazine the most dominant feature is the main image as the artist is wearing sun glasses which reflect back to show the rest of the band, it is immediately eye catching for the reader. The fact that we can't see the main artists eyes is intriguing as it is unusual to not see someones eyes as it takes away a sense of personality, however this makes other aspects of his face more emphasised. For example his lips and hair are further emphasised because of this, his hair covers most of his face other than the glasses which makes the glasses even more dominant for the attention of the reader. As the glasses show the other band members it is highly engaging as the reader will be interested to see them so will look at it closer, the glasses are also highly engaging as they are reflecting light in the central corners so emphasises what is in the glasses reflection. The slogan below is relevant to the image as it states, 'Liam's beady eye kick off' as i...

Kerrang front page

Image
Straight away from looking at this front page you can infer what genre of music it belongs to. Through the images and font style it is clear that the magazines genre is rock/indie as the font of the title is smashed which connotes the rock genre as it is quite aggressive and expresses anger. The images connote the rock/indie genre as in the main image the artist is clenching his fist and scowling at he camera which infers that he is a rock artist as he comes across troubled and aggressive. the other images show artist with piercing and Gothic make up on inferring that they are from the rock or metal genre as well but some of these artist such as the band on the right 'Paramore' are considered to be indie. Again the house style is three colours: white, black and red, the colour red could have been used to denote anger and danger which is also referred to in the music genre of rock and metal. Also the red font highly emphasises certain text with is significant to engage the rea...
