contents page analysis

Image
From the first impressions of this magazines contents page I can infer that the genre of the magazine is pop as the artist denotes the typical female pop artist. I like the way that the background of this page fades from black to white which also makes the font colour change as the background colour changes such as white text on black background. I also like the title of the page as it is in block capitals it is clearly emphasised by to the audience. The main image also over laps the title which makes her the main focus of the page especially her legs as they take up the majority of the main image. The whole pages format is based around the artist legs which in a way makes her promiscuous and makes it prominent that she is a female artist, which could engage a larger audience as it could appeal to a wider range of people. Just like other magazines that I have researched the contents page is separated into different sections for example this one uses the 'features' and 'f...

Kerrang contents

Image
This contents page uses a different format in comparison to other ones that I've researched as it has placed the image at the top of the page and the text at the bottom whereas other magazines have put the text to the right or left and the image on the opposite side, this is the general format used for a contents page. This has also included screenshots of the pages on the top left which could indicate that these are the main pages/articles. The house style is constantly used throughout the magazine to create synergy between the pages, it is becoming clear to me that most magazines of this genre use the same house style colours of black, white, yellow and red. I would say that these colours are used as they aren't gender specific/gender neutral so appeal to both genders. This contents page also uses the blocky look but also has an image that takes up about half the page. However, the text is placed in columns and the titles are very blocky as the font is block capitals and pu...

NME contents

Image
This NME contents page is highly organised as it uses a set layout and house style. It uses the blocky look as the text is all formed on the right hand side and in particular columns. The house style is effective as it clearly defines the different sections of the page and highlights the important parts of the text as it uses a different colour of yellow or red. The main house style used is black and white used alongside the red and yellow, with the red predominantly being used for the page numbers and magazine title. There is synergy between the pages of this magazine as they all use the same house style, which is effective as it can then be associated with the magazine. Although the page has used the blocky look it has also included a image which covers quite a proportion of the page as it indicates that the main article will be about the arctic monkeys as the image is of them and their name is in block capitals. The title of the magazine is placed directly next to the title of the...

MOJO contents page

Image
The house style is very effective in the MOJO magazine's contents page as it is rather simplistic in terms of colours as it predominantly uses black and white which seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout MOJO and other magazines. Alongside the black and white is a red colour in order to give the page some life and make certain aspects stand out among the rest. For example the words 'cover story' are highlighted in this red font as it indicated that the story that featured on the front cover will be discussed again on the contents in order to give the reader more information on the main article. The title is placed centrally at the top of the page just like on the front cover to again make it clear to the audience what magazines contents page it is. Underneath the title is the date and issue number which allow the reader to read the most current issues and acknowledge of successful the magazine is as it is likely that if a magazine has a lot of issues it will be a ...

Q contents page

Image
The Q name and logo has been placed in the traditional left hand corner, synergy between the front cover and contents page. It makes it stand out among the rest of the text as it is in the branded red box, this is important as the reader becomes aware of the magazine that they are reading and can therefore associate their taste in music with this magazine. The article for James Blunt is placed second on the features list even though the main image on the contents page is of him which is focuses particularly on him as it uses a close up camera shot. This is surprising as the image largely dominates the page, yet he is placed second on the feature list. I would usually assume it would be first and therefore the main article. I will take this into consideration when designing my magazine as I think that the main article should be listed first on the contents page. There is a separate section on the page for features of the magazine that are there in every issue, it is stated as 'e...

Q double page spread

Image
The double spread that Q have used in the Florence issue uses a key red colour throughout the house style which is the main colour of these pages as it links in with Florence. The red hair that Florence has matches the main theme of the room that she is in and her clothing, it also creates synergy between the two pages as red is also used on the left hand side page from boarders and text. This colour makes her quite individual and bold despite her shy body position. It further represents the genre of music as it presents her being indie which is connoted by her clothing, stance and the general contents in the room such as the lamp and cluttered room. The album cover at the top left of the page (next to the main text) draws attention of the reader, it sits along side the quotation 'This years most unique voice' which shows that Florence is set to be an artist to watch and that the Q magazine believe she has high hopes to conquer the indie music space, meaning that she must be a...

Kerrang double page spread

Image
Firstly, the background of this double page spread clearly shows that the magazine is based around fame as the lights around the page act as a prop in a way for famous people as they are generally seen around their mirrors. There are also little sparks of light around the page to connote the artist being famous and a big deal in the music business. Again the house style is black, white, grey and pink. This makes the pink text stand out among rest of the text and background image. The bands name and leader signer of the band are highlighted to the reader in this pink font along with words such as 'death of the rock star' in order to engage the audience as it leads them to believe that the artist has changed 'death' and that they might be changing the genre of music that they do. The article is shown to be an interview straight away as the text in a white block indicates a question and the text below is the answer. Some of the questions are quite personal such as 's...

MOJO double page spread

Image
The double page spread that MOJO have used in the issue of the Arctic Monkeys uses a black and white background which represents the genre because it is relatively robust and contrast the orange font which further makes it stand out among both the text and image. The clothing that the two band members are wearing further represents the genre that the Arctic Monkeys present as they are wearing relatively basic clothing and doesn't particularly make them stand out in a crowd but still gives them their own sense of style. This is shown by the band member on the right wearing his sun glasses tucked into his shirt. The title first starts off in an orange colour but fades to white, this makes it very dominant on the page and catches the readers eye therefore making them want to read the article to see what it is all about. Also in an orange text colour are the band members names, them being the most famous members of the band. The bands name, Arctic Monkeys, isn't really mentioned...

Title for front page

Image
The title for my music magazine will be 'strings' as I feel that it represents the genre of my magazine, connoting the involvement of a guitar in which the reader can infer that the genre is acoustic music. The font style also engages the reader as it simplistic which would draw the attention to the name and the names meaning. The font also has a sector of the 'g' missing which is eye catching but doesn't draw too much attention away from the main image on the front cover. I think that I will leave the font black as the style stands out alone, I will use a different colour of text on other pieces of text on my front cover such as the artists name and main article. The font style connotes the genre of acoustic music as it is quite basic but has meaning behind it and is relatively personal as an artist finds their guitar to be apart of them during a song. It is also quite formal as it uses the brackets on the letters which could target a higher social class reader.

Front page template

Image
I have chosen to set out my front cover like this because it leaves enough room for the text, to give the reader enough information about what's in the magazine but also engages the reader to find out what the articles are all about. The image will pro dominantly take up the majority of the page as this is the main code and convention of a magazine and that it will engage the readers attention the most by who features in the magazine. The title will be partially overlapped by the image as through my research this is highly common. Under the title I will include a date, when the magazine issued and an issue number to portray the magazine to be realistic. The large box to the left will contain the artists name, which will be in a different font to the title as this is common throughout current, successful magazines such as Q. I will also have a banner at the bottom of my page as this is a key code and convention and gives the audience more to get evolved with in the magazine. I w...

MOJO front page analysis

Image
MOJO's branding generally includes the artist/band being in front of the title, this emphasises that the magazine is a highly regarded one as it doesn't need to specifically show its title as its audience can acknowledge that its MOJO. This issue has surprisingly used a black and white image which is unusual but I think that it is used to indicate that the band is of an older date therefore it represents the band for what it used to be. Also the magazine is from a while ago so this could show that the codes and conventions of music magazines have changed, this helps me with my research as it indicates that I need to keep up to date with my research as the magazine industry is constantly developing. The image is again of the band and it allows the band to show their individual personalities through their facial expressions and clothing. This engages the audience as it gives the band there own style and indicates the genre of their music and the magazine. The house style is bla...

Acoustic front page analysis

Image
Acoustic magazine clearly represents its genre to the audience even through the first sight of the issue. As nearly all issues including this one have the main artist or band holding a guitar which is a common symbol for acoustic music. The title uses a very simple and relaxed look which also represents the genre as it gives off a soft/authentic vibe which acoustic music is all about. The font used is white, this could be because it again is simple and doesn't draw too much attention to the text or draw attention away from the image. The white, yellow and black house style also give the magazine a relaxed look to it and make the reader focus on the artist or band as that is the most important part of the magazine especially in this genre. The font styles are again different for the artists name as it gives them a sense of individuality and allows their own branding and personality to show. The main image used fully focuses on the guitar and James Bay's key features; this bein...

Q front page analysis

Image
This issue of the Q magazine typically uses the standard Q title for branding and its conventions of this, which refer to the red background and white text which is key to the audience as it is easily identified with the magazine. The title surprisingly takes up the top left hand corner of the page making it dominant to the readers eye. The main image on the front cover highly engages the audience as she is right looking at them and her hand is extremely engaging as she is almost reaching out and touching the reader which is further referenced to in the text under Florence's name. The image also makes a reference to Florence being a singer by her holding a microphone whilst her lips are partially open connoting that she was signing. Her lips being this way could also connote that the magazine is trying to represent her in a sexual way. Florence's whole look clearly demonstrates the genre of that the magazine is based upon as it shows her wearing a silk jacket and lots of ring...

Preliminary task

Image
Firstly I started by looking at the codes and conventions of typical magazines, which indicated to me the key conventions that all magazines contain. This being designated margins for text, main image covering the whole page, title in bold/stand out font and smaller images to balance out the text with additional images. For my front page, I chose to focus my magazine on the sixth form as I could have my main story on one of the sixth form students, this was a simple decision as I could apply it to me and my friends. I chose to follow the codes and conventions of a front page by having specific margins to the side of the page for text, with the main title of the stories in a larger font and the rest of the text flowing underneath. I placed other images towards the bottom of the page to be equivalent with the amount of text, these images are the Whitley Bay high school logo and a picture of the common room to reiterate the magazine being aimed at sixth form students. For the contents pa...

Initial Ideas

Image
For my initial ideas I looked at a couple of examples of magazines that are relevant to genres of music that I listen to. I believe that I will focus my magazine on the genre of music that I listen to in order to have a high level of knowledge on it and to have a wide range of interest in that genres articles. For all the magazines the i looked at it was clear that they all had a specific layout and house style. The magazines I looked at were Q, Mojo, Acoustic and NME, these were all relevant to genres of music that I'm interested in - that mainly being indie and acoustic music which I have a preference for to base my music magazine on. On the front pages of the magazines that I looked at the layout and house style is very clear, making it easy for the audience to relate the magazine issue to a particular magazine brand. For example, the red and white house style of the Q magazine which is widely known for its title and is simply just recognisable ...
